The Empty Nester Makes Money Selling MLM or Network Marketing Products Online?

I talked about affiliate marketing online.  But, there is another avenue you can pursue – and that is becoming an affiliate/representative of a MLM or Network Marketing company and selling MLM or Network Marketing Products Online.  If you decide to go that route – there are several different things you need to consider .

Traditionally-MLM (or Network Marketing) Companies have operated with a different model.  Their model has been to go to meetings in hotel ballrooms in the evenings or on Saturdays and invite everybody you know – friends, neighbors and family.  That model is tired – people today don’t want to spend their free time traveling to and from these meetings.  And they also don’t want to bother their friends and family – yet again.  With the internet people would rather stay in their home and attend a webinar or teleconference.  That way – they can attend the hour webinar and just be on the computer from 7:00-8:00 and then be available to their family before and after the webinar – instead of leaving at least 30 minutes before the meeting and probably not getting home until an hour or so after the meeting is over.  So- when you are looking at a MLM Company – are they still using the “old method” of meetings, meetings, meetings or have they made it into the 21st century with webinars and teleconferences that people can attend from the comfort of their own home?

The next thing you are looking for is a system.  Does this company or the group within this company that you will be working with have a “system” in place utilizing the internet?  I have seen several sophisticated MLM “systems” out on the interent.  What you are looking for is a group that is using the internet and having success recruiting and selling the products online.  It takes much more that having a duplicated website on the internet to make money online.  And ideally – the group you want to get involved with will have 2 “systems” – 1 “system” to recruit people to join your business and 1 “system” to sell your products online.  Because you need to recruit and sell products to make money.

The next thing to consider is – if the product the company is selling is a product that can effectively be sold online or is it a product that needs to be sold face to face.  Granted you can sell anything online.  But, let’s say – your product is “THE VERY BEST product anywhere” to make migraines go away?  That is an awesome product!  People who have migraines oftentimes haven’t been able to find anything that will make their migraine go away.  They may have found something to give them relief from the pain of the migraine – but not make the migraine go away.  You have a website that explains how awesome your product is at making migraines go away.  Your company has webinars that explain to people how this product makes migraines go away.  But, if you are a migraine sufferer – you have probably tried hundreds of products that all say they will make the migraines go away – and none of them have made your migraines go away!  So, to the migraine sufferer – they feel that they are looking at yet another website and yet another webinar -claiming to make migraines go away.  Maybe the migraine sufferer MIGHT decide to give your product a try to see if it works – and maybe they won’t.  But, if you saw this migraine sufferer in person and gave her a sample of the product and had her try it and it made her migraine go away – WOW – she’d be a customer for life!

Now let’s say your MLM company is selling a computer service that will tune up your computer, clean up viruses and speed up your computer.  And what if that company gives everyone a ‘FREE’ trial to have their computer tuned up before they either sign up to become an affiliate or become a customer?  This is a product that is made to be sold online!  See the difference?  I’m not saying one product is better than another.  All I’m saying is that one product is going to be easier to sell online than the other.

There is a train of thought that the best way to market MLM companies online is NOT to market the company or the product – but to only market yourself.  Train other people to market themselves and then introduce these people to your MLM company and products.  It seems to be working for some people……….

The last thing you need to consider is the marketing plan.  Lots of MLMers will say that “if an MLM person is good – they can make money with ANY compensation plan”.  I think the type of person they are talking about – is the MLM person who has a group of thousands that follow them from 1 company to the next.  A lot of times these people go to “the next big company” get in on the ground floor  – make a lot of money because of  the group they bring with them and they when the money slows down – they are off to “the next big thing”.  And make no mistake – the only people making any money doing that – are the people with the group – not many of the people in the group that are following them.    I have known people who have made a fortune in MLM companies.  I know people who have made a fortune once in 1 MLM company and have been trying to make another fortune in some MLM company ever since.  Because they KNOW it can be done!  Sometimes it is luck that these people make money, sometimes is is skill that these people make money – but most times the compensation plan had to be affiliate friendly.

There are binary plans, 2-up plans, plans where you make most of your money on just the people you sponsor and plans that you make most of your money on how big and deep your group is.  And I think there are pros and cons for all of these compensation plans.  With the binary plans – 1 side is always bigger than the other – and if it’s a plan that you lose the extra money from the good side – you’ve lost a lot of money.  If you can sponsor and your group can’t – you lose a lot of money if you’re compensated for how deep your group goes.  Find out all you can about the compensation plan before you make your decision.

I’m not one of those people who think all MLM companies are scams or pyramids.  Besides, every company is a pyramid – there is a Pres or CEO at the top – then 4-5 V. Pres – then maybe 20 Directors – then maybe 60 Mangers – then maybe 100 supervisors – then the rest of the employees at the bottom – a pyramid.  And if a new MLM company starts and doesn’t make it for whatever reason – I usually don’t think that the pople with the company started out to scam people – either they didn’t have the experience they needed or enough capital or something they didn’t anticipate came up!

In the past few years I have seen several MLM companies.  I have seen brand new cutting edge companies” that were going to blow the lid off all MLM companies”.  I have seen the “BEST products ever to be made” in some MLM companies.  The cutting edge companies were awesome – until the official launch – when the server wasn’t able to handle all the computer traffic generated by the hype!  And by the time the server was fixed – this wasn’t the only company out there doing this cutting edge thing – now there were 2 or 3 – doing it even better.  That is a fact of like with MLM companies.  Find one with a great product – there will soon be 2 or 3 new companies – with a similar product – only better!  I don’t know what to say – me personally – right now I haven’t found a company that has a “system” to work it online, a product that is easily sold online AND a compensation plan that I feel will be easy to actually make money.  I have found companies that maybe have 2 of the components – but not all 3.  So – until I find all 3 – at least for now – I’m staying away from MLM companies.  What do you think?  I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments.

The Empty Nester – Find The Perfect Affiliate Product To Sell

Thanks you for your comments.  Did I mention that all my computer skills are self taught?  I want to reply to the comments – but I haven’t figured out how yet……….Hopefully soon!  But, you know what – that is what I LOVE about the internet – the things I don’t know how to do – I can look up and find information on how to do it – now if I can understand all the computer “jargon” – we’ll be in business!

Let’s say that you have decided that you are going to promote an afiliate product – now the question is – which affiliate product are you going to promote?  I mean there are thousands of different products and companies you could associate with.  So – how do you choose which one to promote?  Here are some questions to ask to help you make that decision:

1)  What TYPE of product do you want to promote?  Do you want to promote a product that you have purchased and ship to the buyer yourself?  Do you want to promote a product that can be drop shipped directly from the company?  Or do you want to promote a digital product that your buyer can download immediately – no shipping involved.

2)  What niche do you want your product to be in?  Are you an animal lover – would you like to promote a product from that niche?  Do you like to travel – would you like to promote a trvel related product?  Are you into health and wellness?  You will find lots of chooses in that niche.  Or are you interested in making money online?  You will find lots of products to promote in that arena.

3)  Ok – you have chosen your niche – now exactly WHAT product do you want to promote?  There are a few questions you will want to answer before you make your final decision:

      A) How much commission will you make for each sale?  You are looking for a product that pays you at least $20.00 per sale.

      B) How popular is the product?  This is a bit tricky – you want a product that is popular – but isn’t being promoted by millions of other people.  You can find this information out by doing a thorough keyword search.

      C) What does the sales page for the product look like?  Is it compelling?  Would you buy the product?  In fact, it’s beneficial if you promote a product that you have purchased yourself.

      D) When do they pay commissions?  Do you get paid immediately when the product is sold?  Does the company pay out once a month?  Every 2 weeks?  Do they hold the commissions for 30 days to see if your buyer returns the product?

Answering these questions will help you find the PERFECT affiliate product to promote.  And you will be well on your way to making your fortune online.

The Empty Nester Makes Money – But – How’s Your Attitude?

whole familyI have found that making money online requires many skills.  But, the one skill that I think is most important is your attitude.  I have always thought that I was a very positive person.  I always looked at a situation as the “glass being half full” instead of half empty.  I have had a deep faith in God for many years.  But, it was just recently that I realized how much the Bible talks about “right thinking” and just how destructive having a bad attitude can be.

A few years back I saw the movie “The Secret” and read the book.  And these started me to really analaze my thinking.  I said earlier that I always thought I was a positive person.  But, I realized that while I was being positive – in the back of my mind – I was thinking “what if (the worst thing possible happens) – what am I going to do then”?  I come from a long and proud line of worriers – worrying – what if it rains tomorrow – what if the light bulb explodes – what if I get soap in my eye”?  Well – you get the picture……  And to see that worrying up close and personal – I knew that worrying was not helpful in the least!  I finally “got it” – my deep seated negative questions were not helping me at all – if fact they were hurting me.

And I also realized that the negative “self talk” (some people call it – head trash) running through my head wasn’t helping me either.  I read that you don’t have any control over the thoughts that come into your head the FIRST TIME  – but you DO have control over what thoughts you think after that first thought appears.  Do you allow yourself to keep running that negative thought over and over again?  Or do you take control of your thoughts and force yourself to start thinking good – positive – right thoughts?

Besides prayer – which I use hourly – I have found 2 techniques to help me get rid of those pesky negative thoughts that left unchecked will keep circling around in my head.  When I first have the negative feeling I use a technique called EFT or “tapping” to make the thought go away.  You tap on your body’s meridian points.  You can google EFT and research the technique.  Or you can go to:  www.emofree.com  for more information (you can download a manual and there is lots of information on what to say and how to say it).

My other trick is to ask a question of my fear or worry.  For instance – if I’m worried about how I’m going to make money online – I would just turn that into a question – Why do I  make so much money online?  Your brain is like a computer – it tries to help you solve problems.  So – if your “head trash” is saying – “what if I don’t make money online”?  Then your brain will start listing all the horrible things that will happen to you – you will lose your house, your car and you’ll be homeless!  But, if you ask the question “why do I make so much money online”?  Then your brain will start solving that question – well – you are smart, you work hard and you know what you are doing!  And your brain will start listing all the reasons that you make a lot of money online!

Don’t sabotage yourself with negative thoughts when it takes just as much effort to think positive thoughts!  Wouldn’t it be great if your thoughts were working for you instead of against you?  Learn some techniques to turn your negative thoughts into positive ones and your success will be unbelievable!

Questions?  Comments?  Please leave either – I want to get to know you!

Until the next time,

The Empty Nester Makes Money – Online

I just started to explore marketing online last June.  My computer skills are completely self-taught.  And my mind just doesn’t seem to understand the technical side of computers.  If I am going to do something even the least bit “technical” online – I need to have step by step instructions.  That being said – you would be surprised by the amount of computer tutorials there are out there!  It seems that you can find directions to do just about anything you want to do.

When I started considering making money online – and really started looking at all the possibilities – my head started spinning.  There are so many different options that at first it is really overwhelming.  And if you don’t figure out exactly which option you are going to pursue – you can find yourself going in all directions.  That’s what happened to me – I knew I wanted to build a business online – what I didn’t know was just what type of business I wanted to build.  Then I was bombarded with all kinds of programs to buy that were going to help me do this and that.  Well – I was going to need them all – wasn’t I – if I was going to successful online?  Before I knew it – I had tons of programs – spent lots of money – and had no idea exactly what I was going to do to make money!  If anything – I was confused than ever!

So I have 2 pieces of advice for you.  The first piece of advice is before you get started – before you purchase ANYTHING – decide exactly which option you are going to use to make money online.  Are you going to offer a service online – lawn service, massage – build a website for people?  Are you going to offer a membership site for people interested in the same topic with tips and a monthly newsletter?  Are you going to join a MLM company and market your company and product online?  Are you going to sell a product online – either your own product or someone else’s product?  Because, depending which option you decide to go with – you will have totally different things you will need to learn.

When you decide which option you are going to use – start trying to narrow it down to the exact product or service you are going to be promoting.  After you have decided what type of online business you are going to have – you will be able to go online and research and find out what types of skills you will need to learn to have this business.

Right now, you are going to be deciding where you want to start.  But, that doesn’t mean that you can’t do other things later.  To be successful though – you need to start with 1 idea and keep working with that idea until you are making money with it – then you can add another idea and so on.  Most of the successful people online have multiple streams of income – that way if something happens to one stream of income (the product isn’t the “hot” product anymore, the manufacturing company goes out of business, a new product comes out that is better) then you haven’t put “all your eggs in 1 basket” and you are still in business with your other streams of income.

My second piece of advice is don’t purchase ANYTHING until you have a complete business plan in place and know exactly what you need to know to be successful in that business.  Also – don’t purchase anything unless you are going to use that product in the next day.  Let’s say you decide you are going to use twitter, facebook, write articles, start a blog and use youtube videos to make money with your online business.  Don’t make the mistake of buying products right away for all those areas just because you are going to need them sometime!  Start with one of those areas – let’s say – start a blog.  Look for a product that will help you know how to start a blog.  (This “product” can be a program to download, a newsletter to join or a product to purchase)  When you have mastered that technique – figure out what else you need to know about starting a blog.  Then look for a product, website or download that will help you learn to master that skill.  If you go and buy everything you can find on starting a blog to start with – you will have a lot of duplicate information – you will probably lose or forget that you have purchased something – you will be overwhelmed by the amount of information you are bombarded with – you will be jumping around and not take the time to master 1 skill before you move on to the next one and you will have wasted a ton of money on information you already have!

Until next time-

The Empty Nester Makes Money – Sales, Sales, Sales

In my sales career I have sold several different products.  I have been both inside sales reps and outside sales reps.  There are several different types of sales positions.  You can be responsible for some type of territory – either geographically or by business type.  Usually with this type of position you will have active businesses that you are responsible for – to foster a relation with them and grow the existing business.  Plus you are usually responsible for selling new businesses and reach a certain dollar quota for the year with your territory.  But, the whole emphasis of this type of sales is that you are building a relation with the customer – whining them and dining them – so to speak.

Then there are the sales positions where you are only responsible for generating new business.  You will be doing cold calling and networking to find new business for the company.  Most of the times in this type of sales – once you have made the sale – you will never speak to the customer again.  If the customer has a problem – someone from customer service will take care of the problem.

Today – these different types of sales are called – farmers and hunters.  Farmers are the ones who sew the seeds and nurture the crops – customers – and grow the existing business to the maximum amount of business possible.  The hunters are the ones who go out and hunt for new business.  Once you have closed the sale – you are off looking for the next sale.

Of course with outside sales – you spend most of your time out of the office either on appointments you have already made – or going “door to door” cold calling to look for new business.  With inside sales – you spend ALL your time on the phone making phone calls to close sales.  There are pros and cons to both these approaches.  Are you comfortable on the phone?  Do you like driving and getting in and out of your car all day long – rain, shine, sleet and snow (cold weather and heat waves)?

I have noticed that outside sale positions have changed somewhat in the last couple of years.  When I first started out in outside sales – I had a company car. Recently  I have heard that the companies that offer company cars now are very rare – almost non-existent.  Instead, they may offer a car allowance (and they may not) and hopefully they pay  mileage.

When I started out in outside sales, I made a base salary plus commissions on what I sold.  In my first outside position I was a “farmer” – had a territory that I was responsible to nurture and find new business – grow the dollar amount of that territory.  I am hearing that most outside sales positions are straight commission now.  With this economical climate I believe that businesses have decided this is a way to cut expenses.  Even if the business is doing ok – they feel that this is a way to increase their bottom line.  And now with so many businesses doing this – it has become the norm.

I know many professional sales people will not sell UNLESS they only make straight commission.  They believe they can make more money that way.  Straight commission makes me nervous.  If I am making straight commission – I would like to be selling a product that has some type of residual income.  For instance – insurance – you sell a policy and after the first year -  every month that customer continues to be your customer you make a commission.  After the first year – you residual monthly income is in addition to the new business you sell that month.

That brings me to my last point.  Using my above example – insurance – people need health insurance, car insurance and home owner’s insurance.  But, in this economy – people are holding on to their money and not purchasing life insurance (besides the bare minimum) or supplemental insurance (like AFLAC).  It’s not that people don’t like the idea of having these types of insurance – it’s just that it’s an added expense that they don’t want to add right now.  They don’t feel like they NEED these right now – it’s more a want – and it’s a want that they are willing to put off until the economy gets better.

Especially now – it is much easier to sell something that someone really needs right now – instead of trying to “sell” someone on how your product is going to benefit them.  If you can find a product that has a customer base looking for that product – you have hit pay dirt!  For example – if you can sell Medicare Supplement Insurance to people just turning 65 – these people will be getting Medicare and most people realize they need to purchase a Supplement Package – and you get leads of people who are just turning 65!  Bingo – ready made market.  Or what if you had a legal product and you got leads of people who have a problem and really need to speak to an attorney – again – ready made market.

As you are considering what you want to sell.  Look out there – find a product that is a “must have” for a segment of the population.  Find a problem that people have – and solve that problem.  You will have found a gold mine.

The Empty Nester Makes Money – The Beginning

While I was at home with my kids, I did some part time things that I could work around my kids’ schedules.  I sold some products , I was a merchandiser and I even tried some MLM – Network Marketing Companies.  (Remember, this was over a 20 year period.)  The one thing I really loved about these experiences was that I could set me own hours – around whatever was happening with my family.

When my youngest kids were in High School I got a part time job as a manager of a Curves For Women.  I worked between 26-30 hours a week.  I managed a Curves for a guy who owned 5 Curves in the area.  I loved that job.  I took the Curves from opening to over 475 members in less than 1 year.  This was at the peak of the Curves phenomenon.  One of the things I did was to create an atmosphere of women supporting women.  I was shocked to find so many women who didn’t have any female friends – no support at all.  So – I made the atmosphere fun – we played games while they exercised – question and answer games – they would get prizes.  I would have theme days – baseball cap day – pink day – etc.  And I made sure that everyone who came in to exercise was engaged in conversation – if they wanted to be.  See – I found out that a majority of the women joining Curves were women who had not really exercised in the past – so I thought that if I could make it fun for them – they would come more often.  I started a Book Club that is still in existence today and I also started an “out to lunch” group that still meets at a different restaurant the first Friday of every month.  These activities kept the ladies involved past when a lot of them would have quit exercising.  It was very gratifying to see women who had started saying they had no female friends – leave Curves and go out to coffee with another member after they had been exercising together at the same time for awhile.

But, this comes under the heading - ”all good things must come to an end”.  Remember how I mentioned that this was at the peak of Curves’ popularity?  Well, the owner capitalized on the popularity and sold 3 of the 5 Curves he owned after being open just shy of a year.  The one I managed had the most members – so he made a fortune on it.  It came as a shock to me – I thought the owner was in the business for the long haul – turns out he was a businessman and was in it for the money!  Duh!!!!!!  What was I thinking?  The new owners were young and only bought 1 store.  After they learned the ropes – they didn’t need someone to manage the store for them – they did it themselves.  So – on to the next thing.

The only drawback to Curves was that I had set hours that I had to be there – no flexibility at all!  And I really do like to in charge of my own schedule.  So I bought a “franchise” of selling medial scrubs and towels.  I put quotes around the word franchise because it wasn’t what you would really consider a franchise – it didn’t cost a fortune to have the rights to sell these scrubs.  I had some success with this – but there were some problems associated with it that I didn’t have a clue about when I started.  I was pretty naive and didn’t have a clue what questions I should be asking or what research I should be doing.  The only research I had done was to check to see how the prices I would be selling the scrubs for would compare with prices for them in retail stores.  Also I got a website and thought that would be a big plus.  What I found out then – 6 years ago – is the same today – a website does not do you any good unless you drive traffic to it!  And at that point I had NO idea of how to market on the internet.  Buyers WILL NOT find your website by themselves!  If you build it – they WILL NOT just come!

The other big lesson I learned from that experience was – when you are selling something people are wanting/needing/looking  to buy – it is a lot easier than trying to convince someone that they want to buy your product!  Unfortunately – the kind of scrubs I sold were not the kind that females wanted to buy – if they had a choose,  (One of the things I didn’t research enough)  I sold solid color scrubs – they were of good quality.  But, unless an office had a dress code (all wear navy or maroon, etc) – the women wanted the pretty print scrub tops.  I found a supplier who offered beautiful print scrub tops and added them to my line.  They had a minimum amount I could order at a time.  I placed my first order and went out calling on doctor and dental offices.  The women in the offices LOVED the print scrub tops!  This was the kind of scrub top they wanted to buy.  But, there was 1 small problem – I got an assortment of print tops and sizes.  So I would go into an office and the ladies would fall in love with a top – but they would want it in another color and another size!  And when I went back to order the tops they wanted, I again would have to order a minimum amount to complete the order that would include an assortment of styles and sizes.  And when I went into the offices – the ladies would LOVE the tops – but, they would want this top in another color and another size………..and the cycle would go on and on!  No one wanted to buy the stock I had – they wanted another color and another size…………..  As you can imagine – that can not go on forever!

But, both these experiences were great learning experiences.  From the Curves experience I learned that if you can add some value to your product - that is unexpected – you will build great customer loyalty.  The women expected that if they came to Curves and worked out that they would receive the benefits of better health and hopefully  (most of the time) – weight loss.  But, they didn’t expect that they would have fun coming or that they would meet some of their best friends or that Curves would provide 2 of their most treasured social activities (Book Club and Friday Lunch) or that this group of women would become a big part of their social circle (parties, weddings, etc with spouses).

From the scrubs experience I learned that before you go into business for yourself – you need to do lots of research!  You need to find out who your customers are – what they want to buy.  You need to know all about your competition.  You need to figure out what you can provide them that is different, better or cheaper than they can find anywhere else.  And before you go into a business – it is ALWAYS better if you can go into a business that is selling something that people really need – that’s it’s a need – not a want.  Of course, I’m looking at these situations in hindsight – and you know what they say about hindsight – it’s 20/20.  It’s taken me forever to REALLY get these principals!  In fact – I’m still learning them!

The Empty Nester Makes Money

I am “The Empty Nester”.  Of course, I am not the only empty nester nor am I the first empty nester.  I am just a stay at home mom of 3 for over 20 years, who woke up one day – when my youngest went off to college – and no longer had any children at home to be a mom to!

I loved being a stay at home mom!  I am very grateful that I was able to stay home with my 3 kids.  But, when you have your whole identity built around “being a mom” – it’s a huge wake up call when you are no longer needed to be “a mom” – it’s a kind of empty feeling.  Of course, I still have kids – but once they have left for college – the relationship changes.

I know that men don’t have the same feelings when all their kids have gone off to college.  In fact – a lot of men do “the happy dance” when the kids are FINALLY away at college.  Some men are so excited that they are finally able to set up their “naked room” – like the movie “Failure To Thrive”.  And not every woman feels this “empty feeling” when the kids go off to college.   I think the big reason I lost my way when my youngest went off to college was that I had given up my career and was very invested in the whole mom bit.

So, the past few years have been a time of soul searching and trying to answer the question “what do I want to be when I grow up”?  After 20 plus years – it’s hard to step right back into the career I left in the early 80’s.  A few things have changed in that time!  I had a career in sales then and the field has changed since then.

I don’t think I’m much different than a lot of people – men and  women – who come to a point of intraspection and trying to fugure out what they want to go next.  It’s taken me awhile – some might say longer than most people.  But, I finally have clarity and direction.

Since I was home for so many years, I don’t have a 401K (I don’t think they were in existance when I started staying home).  But, even if I had had one – it probably would have lost value like everyone else’s has in the last couple years.   So, now it’s time to make money for an awesome retirement and some exotic traveling.  I have been exploring every type of job, home based business and career out there – online and offline.  I have looked at almost every product you can sell – B2B and individual – in person, on the phone and on the internet – cold calling and working with leads.

Since I have been looking into so many things recently – different ways to make money – I am going to share with you my thoughts and expertise on the different options out there  - both online and off.  If you have a question on some way to make money – please leave me a comment and I will share what I know about that topic.
